There's no size guide to that because it depends on the hamster. Some Syrians like a sandbath and some don't. One of mine pees in his sand filled ceramic corner toilet and the other just sits in his sand filled enamelled pie dish, only my dwarfs dig and roll in theirs and they have anything from glass pie dishes to ceramic bowls to a biscuit tin base and a purpose bought one.
You need to try it out for a few weeks (they change their mind sometimes). I'd get a container that fits in a certain space and put around two inches of sand in it.
