From what little information I've found so far, hamsters do seem to have vision more in the green/blue/UV end of the spectrum(possibly yellow - hard to say for sure though as it isn't extremely easy to find completely accurate information on this so far). I don't necessarily know whether or not darker shades would be easier to see but perhaps that could help explain even further on the dark green being used more.
