Unhappy Very strange noise!

Sorry for the long post!

My syrian normally wakes up at midday and we can hear her having a little snack in her nest while we take our lunchbreak.

Today I'd heard her rattling around a little, then shortly after there were a series of loud noises I've never heard her make before - a sort of deep gulping, grunting, 'guh' type noise - not like the squeaks she sometimes does.

We both rushed over because we thought she was choking. I lifted her house up and she was peering out at us from her nest - checked her over and her breathing was fine, nothing felt odd, she didn't seem in pain. She sat with us for a bit, had a little explore, pouched some treats and then went back to bed and has been quiet since.

Given that we ripped her out of bed in the middle of the day and prodded her quite extensively she was extremely tolerant. My partner thought she was probably making noises in her sleep, but I was sure she had been awake.

Is this a normal hamster noise I've just not come across before, or should I be worried?
When I was putting her back I noticed she'd chewed away a huge amount of the plastic ring that goes on her tube overnight. I can't see any plastic in the cage so I presume she's swallowed it. (She did this a little before and we now have a ladder on the way to replace it with as she has loads of other things to chew - including a whimzee as I thought it would be similar to the hard chewy texture - but it hasn't seemed to deter her.) Could this be at all related?
