Depends on how many rats you want. They must be kept in pairs or groups as you already know.
The 'rule' is 2 cubic feet per rat. And a wire cage which is tall is better than one that's short and long as they love to climb.
A good 'starter' cage for 2 rats would be the furat plus in p@h. It's about £85 I think.
Thanks are no good for them as they love to climb.
