I have a similar bin cage for a dwarf hamster which is close to a meter long but narrow. It does work for a dwarf but would be too narrow for a Syrian hamster. I use submerged Ferplast guinea pig houses, one minus the front panel on each end as supports for the wheel etc.

I have connected a second, smaller bin cage via a tube to give my hamster the space to have an extra wheel and more toys which works well. I've done this at a later date and my hamster uses both cages.
