One other thing re cleaning. It's best not to use scented things - hamsters have a very strong sense of smell and this can upset them (smells much stronger) or even cause respiratory problems. Cages don't need disinfecting unless there has been illness or disease. Just a warm damp cloth is fine for a general cage clean, or warm soapy water then rinse well. If you ever do need a pet disinfectant then the Beaphar or Johnsons small animal ones are good - not too strongly scented - but best to rinse it off and give it a good airing afterwards to remove the scent.

Hamsters don't smell - the only thing that smells is their pee. The sand soaks that up in a litter tray. They are quite clean little things, always grooming - and will keep refurbishing their nest regularly. Their poops aren't dirty or smelly so don't worry about those unless they start taking over in a big way. They are like seeds really and sometimes they eat them (which is normal). They have two stomachs and can redigest vitamins etc from their poops. So if you take away his hoard and all his poops he would be lost! And anxious.
