Ventilation is very important so meshed windows are necessary together with a meshed lid in my opinion. Aside from the the practical aspect, I like bin cages to look decorative rather than just a plastic box.
I recently connected the bin cage and playpen bin cage of one of my dwarfs and that's the colourful result.
The cages now sit on a long DIY table.
