I second flax seeds - they work wonders for thick healthy fur! I also adopted an older syrian with some fur loss last year. Gave him daily linseeds and within a few weeks his fur was thick and glossy and the bald patches gone. I just put a pinch on a separate dish to his regular food - every day. They seem to like them and lick them up and they're very healthy, It sounds like it could be the wheel that caused the patch on his back. He will love his new wheel. Poor thing - he will probably be a bit stressed for 10 days to 2 weeks while he's settling into his all new environment and I'm sure you know not to disturb anything in that time (unless an urgent safety thing of course). I hope he settles in soon.
I wouldn't bother with a vet check if he seems fine in himself - it'll only add to the stress.
