I used to worry about that with my Barney cage but none of ours bothered trying to escape so I stopped bothering tying the lid down! I found bulldog clips and pegs just popped off or didn’t really close the gap effectively. I think in the end I used sisal string and just tied the lid to the bars at either side but that is a pain if you need to open and close it regularly. You could put a big book on top? I also found that the gap wasn’t actually as big as it looked and less than 1cm. But if you can get your index finger under it then a hamster could probably squeeze through.
