The digging in the corners bit is just kind of what hamsters do, they will always be trying to find places to escape. When mine have been like that I just interact with them a bit and try and distract them, scatter food in the play area, let them climb up my arms/jumper sleeves because again,they think they are escaping
Obviously making sure they aren't going to fall and hurt themselves.
It does sound like you have a plan though re the free roaming, so see how that goes. Goodluck.
