I think the best paint you could use is soy paint. Problem is its kind of hard to find in some places. You can also diy paint fairly easily with flour, water, and something for pigment- be it food colouring or mashed up foods like carrots or berries.
Another slightly more difficult diy is tempera paint. it's been used all the way back since the early renaissance and is quite literally just egg yolks mixed with pigment. It's how those golden biblical paintings were done! It can be a bit finicky to get the right consistency so I don't think other foods as colour would work too well, food colouring would be your best bet. With egg tempera make sure if you use it as a paint to do thin layers and let them fully dry before applying another layer.
