Yes they do make their feelings known sometimes! We can only do what we can as we have to live as well and I haven't had any issues with our previous hamsters. I think personally I wouldn't leave any lights on overnight but the red lights would look very nice in the evening - which is a time they are supposed to be awake anyway! Or during the day when they're asleep. Something I have always wanted to do, which some people have, is record them all night - there are cameras that can do this in the dark via infrared.
