There has been discussion on this before I think. The only colours they can see are blue and green I seem to remember. They also have some very complex cone receptors in eyes. The thing I read about before was that light affects their circadian rhythms - so even though they can't see the colour red, it is possible that they do need total darkness at times. However they can achieve that by going to their house if they have a dark house
