That is a good point. You can get carbon monoxide alarms (look a bit like smoke alarms). We have always had one. The Honeywell one is good and reliable.

I wouldn't entirely blame the food - I know many people have used it for hamsters. It's not good but I don't think it would be the cause of death so quickly so don't blame yourself over anything.
