Yes severe plastic chewing can be a problem as it's not a Safe thing to chew! You could try taping cardboard or something to stop him?
Unfortunately some plastic chewers never learn and a different cage may be needed, but sid is Probably just very tempted ATM
I would just make Sure he gets lots of playtime and maybe a dog biscuit to chew. Keep an eye on how much he chews and the damage
