Default Re: Hello everybody!

Hello and welcome It's good being an "older" hamster owner! I am much older than you ha ha. I find I analyse and observe behaviour more.

Sorry to hear your previous hamsters problems but they do pass on with something once they get older, sadly. Re the fall and injury - you probably already know this, but they do much better with more floor space and less height. So a cage taller than 45 to 50cm would be too tall.

Some things may have changed in the last decade as well. Weekly cleans aren't recommended. If you have a good depth of substrate - say 4 to 5 inches minimum - then you can spot clean mostly. I have a 100cm cage with about 5" substrate in and a litter tray, and only change the substrate about every 3 months with spot cleaning and the litter tray and then just do partial cleans so something always smells familiar (Erin has a video on cage cleaning ).

It also gives a nice soft landing if they do fall. I put any hard or pointy items under a shelf, just in case.
