You can use small amounts of wood pellets to create an enriching texture to their environment but it shouldnt be used as a main substrate because its cant hold burrows.

Alfalfa isnt good for them really but they can have normal meadow or timothy hay in their setups. They don’t usually eat it (maybe a little nibble) but it adds enrichment and some hamsters will use hay for nesting.
