I know it goes against the common belief that bigger is always better but it's usually safer for a hamster to travel in a smaller enclosure as there is less space for a hamster to be thrown around in if the vehicle was to break suddenly.
The kind of carrier that is often advertised for guinea pigs is a good option and allows for you to pop a cardboard box in for your hamster to make a nice nest in. I usually have plenty of cucumber chunks to provide moisture during the journey and if you soak them in water overnight, they can absorb even more water.
