Default Newbie hamster mum

Hi
My name is Diana and I'm in the UK. Tomorrow I get my first hamster, a cute ball of fluff called Oliver. He is coming from a friend who had to split her 2 dwarves, as they started fighting.

I've been stalking this forum for ages, researching diet, habitat etc. I keep degus, but appreciate that there are signifiant differences between the 2 species. Thus far I have managed to make a cage, 90cm by 55 cm, with a deep area of bedding for burrowing, lots of hiding places (5 last count, plus bits of log etc), and am about to stick lollipop sticks to the side of the ramps so they don't fall off when going between the ledges (Degus seem to be a bit more agile, and don't fall off so much, so that was an important learning point ). I have JR Farm dwarf hamster mix in, and have managed to restrain myself from putting in hay..... it seems so unnatural when hay is such an important part of the degu's diet, but I'm sure I'll get used to it!

Looking forward to getting to know my hamster, and all of you as well.
