I agree with the others. Every hamster is different when it comes to adapting. Be sure to talk to him in a quiet voice even if you can't see him. It gets him use to the sound of your voice. Also, when he does appear, be sure to praise him, this will help with his confidence. You could try the tissue trick, get some unscented toilet paper and put it up the sleeves of your arms and leave for a few hours, then place in his cage, curiosity will have him sniffing it, this gets him use to your smell. Do this for a week, add a bit more each day, most hams will end up using it as extra bedding.
