Just noticed you said you'd only had them a few days. Don't worry then. It takes them about two weeks to settle into a cage and build up confidence. If the Syrian needs taming then that is something the kids can be involved with. We did bathtub taming with our hamster (dry bath tub) until he was fully tame and stepson used to sometimes get in the bath first so the hamster can run all over him. Main thing is supervising the kids so they learn to be gentle and not try and grab or hold them tight.
