We chose plastic mesh to make it safer for us as we would be touching the raw edge, since it's much higher than he can reach we don't have to worry about chewing. The lid is weighed down due to the zip tie little squares hooking down, and once again he's not big enough to force his way through, we watched him for a good few hours try to escape.
