I had two male dwarf hamsters that needed extra care on their scent glands, they can be gently cleaned with some saline water and a cotton bud. That is only if they are not cleaning it themselves, it doesn't do them any harm to clean it for them.

Lunar when he was alive ended up with an infection in his scent gland and it needed to be removed, that was a rather extreme thing that happened. I also found I did have to squeeze the scent glands on both males, this helped in getting out an excess oils that were building up.

For now you should be okay with gentle cleaning if its needed but if it starts to look red and swollen, then you will need to go see a vet about the gland.
