Default Re: What kind of hamster is this? Answer Fast Please

This site has the answer. It lists all the species correctly as Syrian, European, Chinese, Roborovski and ........ Dwarf Russian hamster "The size of the dwarf Russian Hamster, which is small and quite mobile, reaches up to 6-7 cm. This kind of hamster, called Gonzales because of being fast in our country, likes to be free."

So a Gonzales is a dwarf hamster (not a Roborovski) - and there are two breeds of Russian dwarf hamster - Campbells and Winter Whites. However most dwarf hamsters are hybrids of these two species (ie the two species have been interbred a lot).

So unless you know a hamster is a pure bred winter white or a pure bred campbells it will be a hybrid dwarf hamster - it could look like a winter white or it could look like a Campbells but still be a genetic combination of both.

So the hamster you are looking it is probably either a pure bred winter white Russian Dwarf hamster (probably unlikely) - or a hybrid Russian dwarf hamster that has winter white markings.

Are you going to get this hamster? Incidentally a lot of info about hamsters on Turkish google is full of rubbish! So be careful what you read. One article said - when going to view hamsters, if you touch them you can catch diseases and should wash your hands. While washing your hands is always a sensible thing to do it is more likely hamsters catch diseases from humans - although maybe the situation is different in Turkey I don't know.

If there is no official hamster organisation or breeders in Turkey then breeding may be a bit haphazard. And you need to be careful with the diet for a dwarf hamster as hybrids can be prone to diabetes. Some will live long healthy lives - others may succumb to diabetes - so a sugar free diet is a good idea to help prevent it developing.
