I think there was a post here about mites that may have come from fitch but if I remember rightly it wasn't certain & the fitch may not have been stored properly.
Given the number of people here that use it without freezing I think you can take it as safe.
As a general rule I freeze cork, wood, any plant material like hay or moss, things like millet & flax sprays & food.
