Default Re: How old was your oldest Syrian?

I have only ever had one hamster but my Syrian boy is around 2 and a half years old and has just made it through a second surgery. He seems to be healing quite well and we are hoping he will live a good few months more before his time comes.
I suppose how long a hamster lives depends on many factors; genetics, diet, their living space and general care. You could do everything perfectly and still have a breeder hamster pass away quite young from illness or have a pet shop ham live on for 3 years or more.
The vet that I go to generalises that a healthy hamster has an average lifespan of around 3 years, maybe a little less. I do believe I saw a post from someone on the forum a while back who had a hamster that was nearly 4 years old and still going strong! Anything over 2 and they are considered to be 'senior'
