I've never used either but I don't remember any members saying there was a need to beak up the blocks.
With normal mix rather than blocks they usually eat about a tablespoon a day, maybe a little more for a syrian, so you can put enough for about three days in his bowl, or scatter it if you scatter feed, then give more food again when it's gone.
They don't normally overeat so better to give a bit more than you think he needs rather than too little.
They need a bit extra to make a decent hoard too.
