I don't know if it is possible to join two RUB securely together as the boxes in the picture have an overlap which would allow then to be securely fastened together - I don't know if that is possible to do with RUB boxes. I don't recommend using cable ties - my Pumpkin chewed through cable ties on her DIY Bucket wheel and playbin - instead I would advise drilling holes through both boxes and then use small nuts and bolts to securely fasten them both togther. I don't know how you would do the lid.
I've seen people using IKEA Samla boxes joined together.
