Default Do Syrian hamsters grow a winter coat?

I'm not sure if it's because of his age or the weather, but my long-haired Syrian suddenly has a super long skirt. It's also very white (he used to be a lot more orange, but maybe that's because the skirt wasn't showing through as much) and a little coarser than it was before. I wonder if it has anything to do with the winter because I got him in May and this is his first winter. But, he's also almost 11 months old now, so could it be his age?

Also, he absolutely hates being brushed, but when grooming himself he can't seem to reach the tips of his skirt where bedding gets tangled. Should I just trim his skirt? Or should I wait until it gets warmer?
