Question New to us hamster

Hi! We are going to pick up our first hamster today. Someone bought one and is getting rid of it, so we agreed to bring it home. I have done quite a bit of research but do not know anything first-hand about hamsters. Its a white winter and the current owner says that he is very tame and loves to be held. My question is do we have to re-tame it? I read somewhere that when you bring your hamster home you should just leave it alone for a few days so it can adjust before you start taming him. If this hamster is already tame, then what should I do? I have a 7 year old and a 10 year old that really want to hold it and play with it, but I don't want to make it scared or anything. Please advise.
