I would recommend adopting a hamster if you can find one available - you can find some really special hamsters through adopting. Although your are new to hamsters you can be lucky to find hamsters who are already used to being handled and even pets at home can have hamsters up for adoption to who have either been returned (like my current girl) or they have been overlooked.
Although as cypher has mentioned if you get a hamster from a breeder/or a show these would be another option to consider to - these hamsters are often handled from a young age so are used to being handled so are more suitable for first time owners as pet shop hamsters have often had little human interactions - although you can find some really friendly hamsters in pet shop too!
