I think in UK, there are lots of resources to get a hamster, not like Canada though...
To be honest, it really depends. Both hamsters from pet stores and shelters are cute little creatures who are dying for love and care. You could try both places and see which hamster is the one for you.
I wanted to have only one hamster, but I ended up having 3 since every time I visited local pet store, my love for them just cried out. Dumpling was left alone till 2.5 months old in the pet store without any toy aside. Kiwi was bullied by another lady in the pet store. So I took them home without hesitating, and I knew I could compensate them with a much better life.
