With two small ones you can have a gap in the middle so the detolf fits right up to the edges and is well supported. With a single bigger one the detolf would hang over the edges a bit. Some people reckon having one end of the detolf pushed up against a wall with all the overhang at that end, for extra support. Two small ones might be easier but a big one can look nicer.
