I think the hamster's personality does have a lot to do with it. My current hamster is in the hamster Heaven which looks great and is a good size however he has stated bar chewing so it doesn't appear to be making him happy as it seems he wants to get out
My last hamster lived in the Savic Bristol which is smaller than the Heaven but she loved it! She never chewed the bars and was just happy and content, however by nature she was calm and placid, and my new ham is more 'lively' (Crazy)
I think it is trial an error to a degree, although I appreciate that buying a cage that a hammy then hates is an expensive mistake as I'm now finding!
