I tend to think that the best species for beginners is the one you feel the most drawn to. Syrians are not always easy and Robos and Chinese are not always more challenging and each individual hamster will bring their own personality into the mix.
Robos generally are one of the liveliest species and that can mean that they're very entertaining to watch but it doesn't mean that they're untamable if you take things at a pace that suits them. Some of the people I've spoken to have had more success in taming them if you start them in smaller cages and upgrading gradually but take the lead from your hamster, they'll soon let you know if they need less or more space.
