I think the weight loss is probably due to age and if it did occur gradually over 4 months then you shouldn't worry. However, I do always weigh my hams weekly because sudden I'd continued weight loss needs to be dealt with. If you find he is maintaining his weight now then he is likely fine. But, if you find that he is losing every week then I'd take him to the vet.
