The first shelf I made - I first loosen the edges of the side I wanted to remove (I used a craft knife but be very careful) and then pull very hard and the side should come off.
But the 2nd one I just pulled very hard until one of the corners of the side I wanted to remove started coming apart from the rest. Then I just continued to pull and the side popped off.
