A lot of pet shops are still selling Chinese Hamsters as being suitable for living in pairs but on a whole they are very much a solitary species and are much happier with their own space.
Unfortunately they're a species that don't always give you much warning that they're going to fall out with their cage mate and when they do fall out, they can really be quite vicious towards each other so it's best to keep them on their own from the beginning.
