I would get a lid. It gives you the ability to add more substrate, like Serendipity toys, but it also gives you the option of using hanging toys. When the weather it warmer, sometimes I'll bring the hamster cage outside for a little bit (supervised!) which would be extremely dangerous if there were no lid.
