If there were no tall toys that your ham could climb to get out it would probably be fine. Though be sure you have no cats or dogs in the same room as your hamster because they could reach the hamster quite easily. Although it would probably be safer to have a lid, as Hamsterita mentioned above they are quite the escape artists and catching an escaped hamster can be difficult!
