Instead of connecting the bins with a pipe,I'd just remove the pipe and cut a panel of sorts and zip tie the bins together for a direct connection.This would mean you'd get the full floor space out of the bins rather than just an 80 x 40 cage with a modular extension
You might need a flat and slightly elevated small container in between,but other than that it's not any more complicated than making holes for mesh!
