I don't have the Alaska so I can't offer advice on the door thing, but it seems you've figured that out. Fill the entire base with bedding! Go crazy, the more bedding, the better
Syrians should have a bare minimum of 8-10 inches, but 12+ is really best for them considering their large size. I'm sure your ham will love the new cage, please share pictures of the setup when you're all done!
