I would upgrade as soon as possible and include plenty substrate and hideouts for him. Also let him settle and avoid any major cage cleans for at least 3 --4 weeks. A daily spot check in toilet area is fine and when cleaning that bit use warm water and replace any soiled substrate with new. Hams like to mark their scent all over their home that includes the bars and toys, it's their way of making it their own.
Good on you for rescuing him, hopefully with time and your care he'll settle.
