I would at least put more substrate in, if you fill the base he would have more to burrow, dig & snuggle up in.

yes, I am trying to keep his cage uncluttered at least initially, but he does have several chew toys, a wheel, a house and shredded paper bedding (which he has carefully moved out of the way rather than sleeping in lol). I just put in about 12 pieces of toilet paper for him to burrow in which he is so far ignoring.
Excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by substrate? There are woodchippings and bedding in his cage, though I have left his play box without. The clear plastic box in the pictures with the bare floor is his play box, rather than his cage.
Quite pleased with how calm he is for a first handling session, as he has not been properly handled before.
