My experience is only with Syrians.
Personally, I find that females have a funky smell when in heat. I try to clean the potty more frequently. But other than the potty and handling during this time, I don't find it unbearable.
However, male hammies are different. I find that they have this dark musky smell ALL the time. Kilian's bedding always has this scent all over it. He doesn't scent mark through pee, but it still is a very strong smell.
Between females and males, I actually think males have a stinkier scent, but this is just me.
