Not to but in here but a 40 gal breeder tank is a very good size for a Syrian. That's what hamsters do it try to escape, all of them the whole species goal is to escape. No need to go crazy building bigger habitats when what Cypher suggested take off the higher level and put in deeper substrate. Try not to worry.
