Can you remove it - and use your wire cutters to cut as flush as you can?

Other ideas are using a dremel to sand down the edges (or a metal file). Or using the plastic windows you cut out to frame it, so that the edges are not exposed.

It's tough. I totally get it! We run into this problem a lot too.
