Just wanted to add, there is an excellent guinea pig dental specialist in Northampton who treats guinea pigs from all over the UK, Oreo included, so there are some good vets, but far too few.

Peter Gurney was part of an organisation called the CCT, which advises to not use vets and instead self medicate and self treat through their 'Rodentoligists' which aren't qualified vets and so illegally prescribe medication.. They are quite controversial and I have heard that they have a bad relationship with the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons). I heard from a well-known dental sanctuary (for piggies) that they quite often end up sorting out piggies who were given incorrect treatment from the CCT, some of whom didn't survive.

I have a book by Peter Gurney but I do disagree with some of the information. I believe qualified, experienced vets are still important parts of medical treatment as they can go down hill so rapidly. Unfortunately that happened with my sweet Toffee, who I have now lost as a result .

I believe Peter Gurney was part of the CCT (Cambridgeshire Cavy Trust) which is where you may have heard of him. Some vets will advise PTS when it's not necessary. Just after I lost Toffee, Oreo got very ill (gut stasis and bloat) and my local vets offered to PTS. I declined and clearly made the right decision as he is now thriving and about to be bonded with a new piggie .
