Thank you all! And thanks for that link Fluffagrams - I was looking for it! Aquarium sealant sounds good. If it was stuck together properly there shouldn't be any sharp edges and I could patch the hole except don't have a soldering iron. I'm in two minds! I don't use the cage but kept it in case Charlie ever needed something smaller again. If done well it would be ok for him as he doesn't dig or chew, but not sure if it would be ok for another hamster in future. The other option is just keep the barred top and look out for a second hand hamster heaven base (same size).
