Hi there. It would be smaller than your 40 gallon tank. It's 100cm by 51cm I think but the height is only about 37cm. It will just fit a 29cm wheel in certain areas, but not a 12" wheel so you might be limited to a 27cm wodent wheel. Which is ok for most hams but if you had a very large hamster you might have trouble fitting a bigger wheel in. But it's a good tank. The bar spacing on top is large (2cm) so the grid top needs meshing. Also the slides slope in so it's not as big as a 100cm tank as you lose space at the corners.

It would be good for a dwarf hammy. Personally, if it was for a Syrian I would go with a tank for the extra height.
